The highlight of the Igreja da Misericórdia de Mexilhoeira Grande (Mexilhoeira Grande Church of Mercy), which dates from the late 16th to early 17th century, is the large rectangular window above the door. Featuring the royal crown, it combines with the church’s sober lines to create a very harmonious ensemble in Baroque style. The original architecture of this church in the Portimão region was changed when work was done to it in the second half of the 19th century. Inside the Mexilhoeira Grande Church of Mercy, four Mannerist paintings of biblical scenes hanging on the church walls immediately draw the attention of visitors. The small sacred art museum also deserves a visit.
