Around 5,000 years ago, an important prehistoric community lived in Alcalar. The megalithic monuments of Alcalar were discovered in the late 19th century and today they are classified as National Monuments. Many signs of that ancient community can still be seen today: a strategic settlement on a hill for defending the people and with a view of the megalithic tombs; artefacts that reveal how they lived and worked; and the megalithic necropolis. To learn more about these monuments, visit the Alcalar Interpretation Centre at Portimão Museum.
