The Main Church of Alvor is the foremost example of Manueline-style architecture in the Algarve. Built in the 1520s, the Main Church of Alvor has the most beautiful Manueline portico in the region, decorated with motifs alluding to flora and fauna, scenes of war and religious symbolism.
Inside, the 18th-century tiles are a highlight, as well as the rich images on the six gilded altars. There is also the famous and miraculous image of “Lord Jesus”, which, according to legend, washed ashore and was placed at the altar by Alvor fishermen.
